Description
Great interactions with babies matter. But they need the right conditions to flourish.
Serve and return is at the heart of responsive baby room practice. Babies look, gesture, move, vocalise and reach out to us—and when educators notice these ‘serves’, respond and leave space for the baby to respond again, rich back-and-forth interactions begin to unfold.
But knowing that serve and return matters is only the starting point.
What helps educators to be available enough to notice babies’ serves? What gets in the way when we are tired, distracted or pulled in different directions? And how might the routines, activities and organisation of the baby room itself be making responsive interactions easier—or harder?
Serve and Return is a complete, ready-to-run 50-minute CPD workshop designed to help baby room leaders and managers explore these questions with their teams.
It combines evidence-informed professional learning with practical reflection on everyday baby room practice. Educators develop a shared understanding of serve and return, explore what it looks like through realistic examples, and then look more deeply at the conditions that enable these interactions to flourish.
Rather than simply telling educators to ‘be more responsive’, the workshop helps the whole team consider what happens for the baby, the educator and the room around them. Together, they identify what they need to KEEP, REDUCE and CREATE to make more space for responsive, back-and-forth interactions throughout the day.
And you don’t need to be an expert in serve and return to deliver it.
The pack includes a short Facilitator Learning Guide to build your own knowledge and confidence before you begin, alongside a complete Facilitator Guide, ready-to-use PowerPoint presentation and concise speaker notes. Everything has been designed to give you the confidence to lead substantive, evidence-informed CPD with your own team—without having to research, design or write the training yourself.

From CPD to everyday practice
This workshop isn’t designed to end when the slides finish.
Your team’s first challenge takes the learning straight back into the baby room: catching great serve and return interactions, sharing what they notice and capturing the conditions that helped those interactions flourish.
Further challenges invite educators to follow babies’ gaze, wait a little longer, notice subtle serves, make time for simply being with babies and protect one another’s interactions from unnecessary interruptions.
The result is CPD that doesn’t just give your team something new to know. It gives them new ways to notice, question and strengthen what happens with babies every day.
Because inspiring baby room practice isn’t about adding more activities to the day. Sometimes, it starts with creating more space for the interactions that matter most.
