In ‘Communication and Language in the Baby Room’, we’ll explore how you – as a baby room leader – can create rich, meaningful opportunities for communication and language throughout babies’ everyday experiences. Description

In ‘Communication and Language in the Baby Room’, we’ll explore how you – as a baby room leader – can create rich, meaningful opportunities for communication and language throughout babies’ everyday experiences. Together, we’ll think about communication and language as something that happens across the whole day, through relationships, play, care routines and shared moments of connection.

We will focus on:

  • What communication and language development looks like in the first two years of life and why these early experiences matter so much
  • Recognising and responding to babies’ many different ways of communicating, including sounds, gestures, facial expressions, movement and gaze
  • Creating language-rich interactions through everyday experiences, including play, mealtimes, nappy changes and transitions
  • Reflecting on the communication environment in your baby room: What is already supporting babies’ communication and language and where are the opportunities for further development?
  • Designing a practical initiative to strengthen communication and language experiences in the baby room where you work

What you’ll get:

  • Deeper knowledge and understanding of communication and language development in the first two years of life and a clear plan to implement an initiative that strengthens communication and language experiences in your particular context
  • Opportunities to learn from other baby room educators and leaders and to connect with a like-minded community
  • Practical resources, including a slide deck with notes to support cascading that you can use with your team to disseminate the learning you take from the workshop
  • A digital certificate of attendance and participation

Course Facilitator:

The course will be facilitated by Dr Mona Sakr, Associate Professor of Early Childhood and author of Social Leadership in Early Childhood Education and Care.
