Description
In ‘Supporting physical development with 0-2 year olds’, we’ll deep-dive into what’s going on in babies’ physical development at this foundational time of life. This isn’t about dry developmental milestones, this is about understanding the world from a baby’s perspective and using this understanding to inform how we can best support them and their physical development. We’ll think about both gross and fine motor movements and how these feed into a baby’s holistic development and wellbeing. We’ll look at different approaches that we can take to support and explore what the science says about the best kind of support to offer.
We will focus on:
- What’s happening in the body over the 0-2 year age range
- Gross motor movement like crawling, cruising and walking and how this feeds into self-determination and personhood
- Fine motor movements like reaching, grasping and holding, and how these are vital for making discoveries about the world and how it works
- The connections between physical development and other domains of development; our aim is to see development holistically and always think about the whole, individual child rather than taking a dry ‘ages and stages’ approach to thinking about development
What you’ll get:
- Strategies to respond effectively – through interactions, environments and routines in the baby room – to babies’ physical development
- Opportunities to learn from other baby room educators and leaders
- A slide deck that you can use to cascade learning with your team
- A digital certificate of attendance and participation
Course Facilitator:

course will be facilitated by Dr Mona Sakr, Associate Professor of Early Childhood, author, speaker and founder of Baby Rooms – Inspiring Leaders.
