Description
How can we get into the great outdoors more often with babies? How can we make transitions to outdoor play and learning more easily?
What can babies learn through being in nature and playing with natural materials? What provocations can be set up outside to support babies to play outdoors and get the most out of the experience?
What does a great outdoor environment for babies look like in the nursery? And how can we go beyond the nursery to support babies to learn outdoors?
In this one hour online workshop, we’ll focus on practical ways to increase and expand the outdoor experiences that are part of your baby room practice. We’ll look together at getting babies outdoors in the first place (not always easy!), setting up the outdoor learning environment for babies, designing outdoor provocations to maximise play in the outdoor environment and how to get ourselves more excited about outdoor play and learning. We’ll also brainstorm opportunities for expanding outdoor practice beyond the confines of the nursery and how babies can get out into the wider community, including diverse natural landscapes, and what this can offer. We know that outdoor play and experiences in nature are vital for the wellbeing of babies, children and adults alike so getting intentional about outdoor play for babies is a stepping stone to a healthier and happier baby room. You’ll leave the workshop with:
- ideas and tips for giving creativity in your baby room a boost immediately
- opportunities to learn from other baby room educators and leaders and to connect with a like-minded community
- practical resources, including an annotated slide deck that you can use with your team to cascade the learning you take from the workshop
The workshop will be led by Dr Mona Sakr, Associate Professor in Early Childhood and author of many books about creativity in early childhood, including ‘Creativity and Making in Early Childhood’.
